Accessible Homes for People with Sight Loss

Published: Jun 20, 2007

A UK-based project by the RNIB Cymru will create a design guide for building and adapting existing homes for people with sight loss

The Welsh Assembly Government has adopted Lifetime Homes principles for all social housing in Wales. The RNIB Cymru is supported by technical consultancy from JMU Access Partnership.

According to Linda Rees of RNIB Cymbru UK, the project was based ‘on an extensive literature search and, most importantly, was informed and shaped by views of people with sight loss’. As a result of the partnership with Wales & West Housing Association, the project provided an opportunity to evaluate the recommendations. The project resulted even in the fact that all social housing built in Wales would have to incorporate RNIB Cymru’s recommendations.

The guidelines set by the project and the creation of a pilot house may be the first of its kind in Europe. Requests for the guide have been received from Denmark, Switzerland, Malta, Australia, Cyprus, Norway, The Czech Republic and New Zealand.
