AudioGames.net: One Site for All Games for The Blind and Visually Impaired
Published: Jun 19, 2007Audio-only computer games were had to find that is why Richard van Tol and Sander Huiberts started SoundSupport to build games themselves as and collected over one hundred audiogames on their Web site. They review games as well as write articles on the past and future of audio games.
An audio game is a game that consists (only) of sound. Its game mechanics are usually based on the possibilities of sound as well. Usually (but not always) audio games have only audio (and no video) output. Van Tol and Huiberts write on their site: “Audio games are NOT specifically games for the blind! It is true that most audio games around at the moment are developed by and for the blind community. But we think audio games have the potent ional to be a genre on its own due to the immense undiscovered possibilities of sound.”
Â
They helped developing the games Sneller, Drive, The Curb Game, Ratjeprak and Demor. That were very popular amongst players and are fun to play. Driver, for example, is a car racing game based on pure audio. A navigator shouts that you are driving like a maniac or like a snail and it is a lot of fun, especially since you cannot see anything but have to score based on the sound of the game alone.Â
