Book Reader - A Reading Peripheral for Visually Impaired

Published: Jun 23, 2007

Plustek Book Reader, Plustek’s new text-to-speech peripheral device for vision impaired users, is the only one on the market priced under $700 USD.

It integrates high-speed scanning, high-quality voice, highly accurate text-to-speech and optical character recognition functionality, all in a single compact device. With additional features like magnification, font controls, volume controls, speech controls, bookmark functions and PDF reading, this device is a highly versatile computer companion designed exclusively for the visually impaired.

Optical character recognition (OCR) and text-to-speech (TTS) software are included with the Book Reader. With the press of a button, the document placed on the screen is scanned; and with the press of another button, the Book Reader transforms printed words into audio output that can be saved in MP3 format for future access.

The embedded OCR guarantees accurate scan results and sees to it that a clear message is generated, even when the text is disoriented. The book reader comes with Plustek-patented SEE Technology that uses a curved lamp to provide a clear scan of the book without distortion for big, bulky books, which usually make scanning near the spine difficult.
