Braille Mouse-Like Computer Display

Published: Jun 20, 2007

Normally, displays for the visually impaired are on the large and expensive side. Many actuators are used to create these refreshable tactile displays with 20 - 80 Braille cells, each with eight pins that can be raised or lowered to represent Braille points.

The Braille mouse takes a different approach, simulating the larger display in a much smaller form by employing a rotating disc. The Braille cells live inside a mouse-like case, with a reading window inside to allow users to feel the characters on the disk. An activation mechanism below the disk brings the Braille pins into the correct orientation.
