Breakthrough For Deaf Customers in 3G Technology
Published: Jun 19, 2007Sweden’s mobile phone company, 3G, has a record number of deaf customers and just launched sign language supported Web pages called 3G. Finally, deaf callers have the same possibility as hearing callers to "speak" live on a mobile phone.
3G and a Swedish Deaf Organization, Sveriges Dövas Riksförbund (SDR), will evaluate the future 3G services for signing people in Sweden. In honor of the cooperation , 3G has launched Web pages with sign language pages on www.tre.se/tecken.
With the new assistive technologies, it is now possible to call someone by video and use sign language to communicate. The pricing of 3G’s technology is a set fee for the customer, who receives a mobile phone, voice- and video calls without additional cost. These developments have contributed to the usage spreading extremely fast among the country’s estimated 10,000 deaf citizens.
“It feels fantastic to be able to open up the mobile world to a group that previously has been shut out, and naturally we would like to find more ways to offer services suitable for deaf and hearing impaired,” says Helena Westin, Nordic Marketing Director 3.
