Computer Eye-Control for Severely Disabled Users

Published: Jun 19, 2007

Iriscom is combining assistive technology products with personal training for people with a physical disabilities. With the use of a new product called Quick Glance 2, they can help users to control the computer with their eyes.

Quick Glance was developed by EyeTech, USA and is an eye tracker that is used all over the world. “We at Iriscom have been working with them for two years now. In this time, Quick Glance has become a very efficient eye tracker, especially in the disabilities field,” said to Pedro Palomo, Managing Director of Iriscom.

Iriscom makes use of EyeTech’s Quick Glance technology and Palomo says that they offer a turn-key solution that includes a preliminary test with the potential user, personalization of the system for the user, training for the user and his/her family and 24-hour support. “By doing this, we try to break the barriers that often prevent people with disabilities from using technologically advanced solutions.

The problem is not so much the price or the complexity of the solution but giving the users and their families the confidence that they are going to be able to really benefit from the system. This is resulting in an ever-increasing use of the system by people with different kinds of disabilities, such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) or CP. In fact, it is already being used in several schools for teaching children with CP who before had no way or found it very difficult to interact with their environment. In order to achieve this, we are giving training and support to teachers and therapists,” added Palomo.
