Computer Keyboard in Braille
Published: Jun 23, 2007
Researchers of Barcelona’s Autonoma University (UAB) and ONCE (Spanish Organization for the Blind) have developed a Braille computer keyboard. According to UAB Professor Jordi Roig, who is blind himself, the keyboard is especially useful for people who have trouble with hand and arm coordination.
This new keyboard for the blind connects to the computer with a USB key, so that it is not necessary to re-start the computer every time it is connected. The keyboard makes it easier for visually impaired and handicapped people to carry out tasks involving mathematical operations, chemical equations and even musical notes, without needing the help of another person.
Researchers have combined the function and movement keys of the conventional keyboard and substituted the number keys for eight Braille keys, which enables users to write in any language.
The keyboard will be marketed by ONCE and will cost between $730 USD and $975 USD.
