ComUnic AAC Portable Communication Platform
Published: Jun 19, 2007The portable version of the ComUnic, a new communication device developed by the Belgium company Skil NV, enables users with a speech impairment to communicate more easily and also to gain greater control of their environment. The ComUnic is a solid and powerful system with a touch screen. In combination with a sound card and a speech synthesizer, it can really help a user to express their creativity.
The ComUnic uses Winspeak to communicate and shows its users in a simple way how to deal with graphic symbols. It uses both digital speech recorded on the computer and synthetic speech. The latter is produced through software and the sound card of the platform. Whether you use a single, basic sound card or multiple cards with extensive vocabularies, Winspeak makes it all possible. Even direct communication with speech output, writing and printing letters, is possible. Moreover, Winspeak can be adapted to the user’s taste. The user can choose from several pages, each showing a number of symbols on the screen. Every single page may comprise 2 to 96 cells. Every cell may contain a symbol, text or some of each, and by activating a cell, words can be spoken or several functions can be activated.
Â
By activating a cell, programmable appliances can also be operated by remote control. This way, the TV or stereo can be activated with the use of an infra-red transmitter. The ComUnic is not yet available in North America
