Convert PDF to Text

Published: Jun 22, 2007

A free program, PDF to TXT (also written PDF2TXT), is used for converting files in Portable Document Format (.pdf extension) to plain text (.txt extension). The program is powered to convert multiple files in a single batch operation, either using a GUI dialog or a console-mode command line.

The resulting text files are accessible by any editing or viewing program, along with provision for a plain text view for the PDF files. PDF2TXT works on any 32-bit version of Windows (Windows 95 and above) along with Internet Explorer 4.0 and above.

PDF2TXT, a command-line system, only works when run from a DOS box under Windows.  The ideal installation suggested is as follows:

  • Initially create a directory called c:\pdf2txt. Un-archive all files from pdf2txt.zip into the new directory. Add this directory to the DOS search path.
  • Run the batch file pdf2txt.bat to convert files from .pdf to .txt format (leaving the PDF input files intact).  If pdf2txt.bat is run without any parameters (or with a /h or /? parameter), it displays a help screen that explains the command syntax.

When the file manual.pdf is to be converted from PDF to plain text:

  • Enter the command at the DOS prompt: pdf2txt manual.
  • Suppose all .pdf files in the current directory are to be converted to plain text.  Enter the command at the DOS prompt: pdf2txt *
