Desktopzoom Screen Magnifier with Full Screen Magnification for Windows 2000/XP

Published: Jun 22, 2007

Though small (176 KB in size), DesktopZoom is a free, feature-rich screen magnifier utility for Windows 2000/XP. It supports three magnification modes, including full-screen magnification.

Although many free screen-magnifier utilities are available, full-screen magnification is supported by very few magnifier utilities.

Full screen magnification is a typical feature of professional screen magnifiers, such as Lunar, Magic and Zoomtext. Full-screen magnification refers to the magnification of everything a user sees on a monitor, thereby allowing a user to access all the areas of a desktop by moving the mouse around.

In 2005, issist.com released iZoom, the first free screen-magnifier utility for Windows 2000/XP featuring full screen magnification. However, this free version limited the magnification on the Internet to three times. If more magnification was required, a user could buy iZoom 1.2 for $79 USD, which had no magnification limitation for viewing webpages.

Though iZoom does not include all of the features commonly found in real professional screen magnifiers (including Lunar and Zoomtext), it can still be a great solution for a lot of people, including those that may be more budget conscious.

One caveat about full-screen magnifiers is that users may find it difficult to see the mouse cursor in full-screen magnification mode. More keyboard support for changing the level of magnification and switching between magnification modes should be included.

The other two magnification modes in DesktopZoom are magnifying an area around the mouse cursor and magnify in a fixed window on the desktop.

A user’s magnification settings can be saved and there is no need to install DesktopZoom. Just download the program and run it.
