EVAS and Dell Providing Accessible Computers to Visually-Impaired Veterans

Blind and visually-impaired veterans throughout the US will receive specially-equipped Dell computers through a contract between the US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and Electronic Vision Access Solutions (EVAS).

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) estimates that approximately 1,000 veterans participating in their rehabilitation program for the blind will receive these customized Dell OptiPlex(TM) computers each year. The systems are fully integrated with application software, peripherals and assistive technology that make the systems accessible to people who are blind. Dell flat-panel monitors, printers and scanners are also included. The computers are shipped with both large print and Braille guides for quick, easy set-up and use.

The one-year Computers and Software for the Blind contract awarded to EVAS by the VA went into effect at the end of July 2005 and includes four one-year options for renewal. It provides a standard Dell configuration that VA hospitals around the country can order for veterans in their area, helping ensure each veteran receives a consistent, quality product.
