Eye Control with VisionKey (Eye Tracking)
Published: Jun 19, 2007EyeCan, a Canadian based company, has developed an eye controller for people with severe physical disabilities that need alternative control for computer communications. Dubbed VisionKey, the software system can work with a standard webcam or with a specialized viewer that can be mounted on a pair of standard eyeglasses.
EyeCan developed the VisionKey for users that have the cognitive skills to make a text selection but have not been able to use standard computer hardware. Supported with speech synthesizing technology, the VisionKey offers a solution for everyone with Windows or Mac.
Â
EyeCan offers different editions depending on the specific needs of the user. One uses a standard camera and a visual keyboard, which is projected on the monitor by a software program. The camera follows the movements of the user’s eye, so it knows which key has been seen and therefore selected. The other edition is the full version of VisionKey, which features a miniature viewer that is mounted on an eyeglass frame and fitted with an eyetracker and gaze selector. Since this system tracks the movement of only one eye, the other eye can be used to view the environment.
Â
VisionKey has separate reading software that can also be used to operate the computers. The reading appliance has a double 20-character alphanumeric LCD monitor and communicates with the viewer by a cable. The eye-tracking movements are translated into mouse movements and send immediate commands to the computer.
Â
VisionKey can be ordered from EyeCan for $4495 USD or without the speech synthesizer $495 USD.
