M-I News Reading Service Offered on Phones for the Blind

Published: Jun 20, 2007

As a special service to the blind, visually impaired and disabled, the Messenger-Inquirer is now available via a free telephone service from the National Federation of the Blind.

The service allows subscribers to choose news from that day, the day before or the previous Sunday’s edition of the Messenger-Inquirer or any of more than 170 other newspapers. A standard touch-tone phone can be used to select the newspaper, section and article from a menu. The menu also lets users change the speed and quality of the voice, skip ahead or back within the articles, spell words or search for a particular subject. No computer experience or special training is needed.

Anyone who can’t read conventional newspapers because of a disability qualifies for NFB-Newsline. In addition to being a benefit for the blind, the service allows others who have lost much of their vision to actively participate in community affairs.

Eligible persons can register for NFB-Newsline by calling (877) 266-2807 or by visiting http://www.nfb.org/newsline1.htm
