One Web site for All Audio Games for Blind
Published: Jun 20, 2007Audio games were hard to find until Richard van Tol and Sander Huiberts started to build audio games themselves and collected over one hundred audio games on their Web site. The world of audio games is different from any other game and thousands of blind teens find the creative world of games to be just what they are looking for.
An audio game is a game that consists (only) of sound and has game mechanics that are usually based on the possibilities of sound as well. Usually, audio games have only auditive output. Van Tol and Huiberts write on their site: “Audio games are NOT specifically games for the blind! It is true that most audio games around at the moment are developed by and for the blind community, but we think audio games have the ability to be a genre on its own thanks to the immense undiscovered possibilities of sound.”

They helped develop the games Sneller, Drive, The Curb Game, Ratjeprak and Demor. These audio games are very popular amongst players and are fun to play. Driver for example is a racing game based on pure audio. A navigator shouts commands and chastises the driver for driving wildly or too slowly, which can be very exciting for the player, since they can not see anything and have to score based on sound.
