Quick Glance 2 Eyetracker – The Eyes Have It

Published: Jun 20, 2007

Quick Glance 2 is an eye-operated computer control system and successor of Quick Glance 1, both from Eyetech Digital Systems Inc.’s. Quick Glance works by tracking the user’s eye with a camera mounted inside the system, then transmits commands to the CPU based on the movement of the user’s pupil. Computer functions are activated by blinking the eye and Quick Glance 2 has been expanded with an option for laptop mouse replacement.

Quick Glance is a system which does not connect the user to the computer by cables but tracks the user’s pupils at approximately 22 inches from the screen. A camera is directed at one of the eyes and tracks the eye’s movements. Quick Glance software calculates the point on the screen where the user is looking at by measuring the eye movements. The mouse cursor responds directly to any movement of the eye and uses this information to control the computer.

With adjustable delay time and vibration margin a mouse click is executed on the spot where user fixates his eye. Double-clicking, right-clicking or dragging is also done this way. Combined with an on-screen keyboard and software all Windows programs can be operated, such as a word processors, an e-mail program or a speech agent. The combination of the speech agent and eye control make the system not only a computer adaptation but also a valuable communications device.

Quick Glance 2 models vary in price and functionality; as the price goes up, so do camera quality and range of eye movement. Quick Glance 2 is completely digital and can only be connected through a FireWire port. Quick Glance 2 price ranges for $4,480 USD to $6,480 USD and works with Microsoft Windows 98 and XP.
