Talks vs. Mobile Speak
Published: Jun 20, 2007There are two mobile phone screen readers on the US market: Germany’s Brand & Gröber company (now acquired by ScanSoft) and Mobile Speak, from Code Factory in Spain. Darren Burton of AccessWorld gave both products a thorough test.
The conclusion of AccessWorld was that there where no “significant differences in their performance.” They are both considered good-quality products that provide full cell phone access and can read all screen text and numbers.
Burton said: “The fact that two good-quality screen-reader products are available to make cell phones more accessible is exciting news for people who are blind or have low vision because we now have a choice of two products that provide much better access to the features of the Nokia 6620 than we had with any of the phones we have evaluated previously.” He hopes that the development of both products keeps continuing and expects Web access on both versions in the future.
Optelec the US distributor of Mobile Speak, released Mobile Magnifier as an add-on to Mobile Speak and responded to the article with the notice that a Bluetooth QWERTY and Braille keyboards where coming soon to complement Mobile Speak assistive technology.
Talks can be found for around $295 USD on a software only base and Mobile Speak is available for $100 USD more.
