Terraformers Audio Computer Games for the Sighted and Non-Sighted
Published: Jun 20, 2007Terraformers is an audio/visual hybrid game for both sighted and visually impaired and blind players. The interface was awarded the "Innovation in Audio Award" at the Independent Games Festival 2003.
There have been games designed for the visually impaired in the past, but this is the first game that is created to appeal to the sighted and non-sighted markets at the same time. “These games break new ground in interface design using unconventional means of input and output but they tend not to attract the mass market,” according to Thomas Westin from IGDA Games Accessibility Special Interest Group. His company’s 3D graphic game Terraformers is a different kind of game that appeals equally to the sighted and non-sighted.
The game takes place in the future when mankind starts the colonization of other planets and makes use of intelligent robots to create an atmosphere suitable to human life. But on the distant planet, Tellus 2, some of the robots evolved and became too intelligent and revolted against their creators. To solve the games the players uses firearms, secret keys, audio puzzles, communication devices and other tools. To fight back, the robots have locked doors, hidden the computer parts and attack the user on sight.
Terraformers can be downloaded with a $40 USD license key or can be purchased on CD for $60 USD at the Terraformers website.
