Thunder: Downloadable Free Screen Reader for People with Visual Disabilities
Published: Jun 28, 2007
Thunder, a free screen reader that provides all on-screen content as ‘spoken’ audio output, has been launched at Sight Village, the annual vision impairment conference devoted to blindness issues in Birmingham.
Thunder can be downloaded from Screenreader.net, a new, non-profit, community interest company (CIC) from Choice Technology. The software was developed in partnership with international assistive technology UK company Sensory Software.
The software is free to individual users but organizations must pay a yearly subscription depending upon their size for using the screen reader. Users would need a computer running Windows 2000, XP or Vista with speakers or headphones to use this software.
Two people with visual disabilities from Peterborough UK and Sensory Software Ltd in Manchester inspired the development of ScreenReader.net. The talking computer could be a gateway to literacy, learning, work and financial independence for people with visual disabilities. Efforts are to make this blind-friendly talking software available worldwide.
