University of Singapore Develops Augmented Reality As~1

Published: Jun 20, 2007

The National University of Singapore is initiating an augmented reality–based (AR) virtual keyboards and assistive technology (AT) devices research project. The results enable physically disabled persons as well as elderly individuals to perform daily tasks more easily.

The Augmented Reality (AR) technology is a technology that uses computers to overlay virtual information onto a real scene and provide information on the senses which humans cannot detect easily. The AR-based AT assists physically disabled persons in carrying out their daily tasks through complementing and augmenting their limited abilities and disabilities. It also provides information that is augmented with various forms of interactive media such as computer graphics and sounds customized to the user’s needs.

The project will allow people with a disability and elderly people to operate standard household equipment and communicate with their loved ones via the Internet and computer technology. Disabled students through virtual keyboards (VK) can also improve their written and oral communication skills as VK can be accessed easily without a mouse or a physical keyboard. In addition, the VK is fully configurable. In years to come, AR–based VK and AT devices will prove to be beneficial as Singapore strives to meet the needs of her ageing and disabled citizens efficiently.
