What is a Head Tracking Mouse?
Published: Jun 25, 2007
Head Tracking technology is an alternative to the mouse that allows the person control over the movement of the cursor by using only the movement of his head.
The Head Tracking device transmits a signal from atop the computer monitor (or laptop) and tracks a reflector placed on the user’s head or eyeglasses.
When the Head Tracking device is calibrated, the movement of the user’s head relates to the direction the on-screen cursor will travel. Turning the head left directs the mouse to move left and turning it right directs the mouse to move right.
This device only provides individual control over mouse movements. It does not provide mouse functions such as a mouse click.
Dwell Select is an assistive program for head tracking systems that enables the user to perform mouse click and “drag-lock” functions.
When the cursor is stationary for a pre-defined time (usually one to three seconds) the Dwell Select then performs an assigned mouse function.
Another supportive program functions as an onscreen keyboard, enabling the user to type information into applications for email and word-processing to eliminate the need for the regular keyboard.
